Sierra Leone AIDS Prevention and Care

Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the entire world. It has been ripped apart by bloody civil war from 1991 to 2001 and is slowly recovering. Of 6 million people, 2 million were displaced by fighting, many of whom struggled to reach nearby countries. Life-expectancy is only 42 years. The country is 60% Muslim and 10% Christian.

AIDS is a major and rapidly growing problem but reliable figures are hard to find. It is thought that 10% of all adults may be carrying HIV.

Personnel from ACET Uganda have been providing technical support and expertise to a range of AIDS programmes in Sierra Leone, working in partnership with SUWA, Tearfund and Mercy Ships.
