AIDS is the world's number one killer disease

AIDS overtook Malaria several years ago.

39 Million people are living with HIV/AIDS worldwide.

There are 15 Million AIDS orphans.

2.9 Million deaths in 2006.

4.3 Million new infections in 2006.

6,500 Africans die each day.

74% of deaths are in Africa.

Only 26% of 15-24 year olds know how HIV is spread (UNAIDS target was 90% by 2005!). This is what makes education and training so important. Poverty means lack of information as well as lack of money.

Only 23% of HIV-positive people in Africa can hope to receive antiretroviral drugs.

Only 9% of HIV-positive pregnant women receive antiretroviral drugs (the drugs reduce the chance of the baby being born HIV-positive). The UNAIDS target was 80% by 2005.

Patrick Dixon, founder of ACET, has collected a good list of AIDS related links here. He has also written books and articles (see the link above left) and these can be either ordered or read on-line.

A good place to look for AIDS statistics is the UNAIDS web site. Try looking in "Publications" and go for the summaries unless you want really detailed info.

Statistics from the 2005 UNAIDS report on AIDS and Dec 2006 update.
