A tour of Nakulabye Junior School

school sign Nakulabye junior school is situated in the slums of Kampala.
alleyway and accessed down an alleyway between two buildings .
washing At the far end of the alleyway is a small clearing with a tree and a washing line of clothes on our visit.
latrines

The school area is used by the whole community.

There are 4 pit latrines which are the schools toilet facilities.

classrooms This is the main classroom area, which has classrooms, each of about 3m square, situated either side of a central path
board When we visited it was school holidays and the more weatherproof classrooms were housing the desks from the leakiest classrooms
all The school serves 650 children from the surrounding community and the outdoor space is barely large enough to contain them all.  There are 10 small classrooms for 650 pupils … an average class size of 65. The children sit on benches.
carrying When we visited many of the children had put on their uniforms and come to school especially to welcome us. This boy in the photo brought his younger brother who he was caring for.

Staff from ACET Uganda visit the school regularly to support the staff and to teach the children how to stay healthy, and about the dangers relating to HIV/AIDS.

Most of the children at this school have been orphaned by AIDS and live with relatives who struggle to pay the £25/year school fees.

bananas Many go without supper at night and therefore FAU pay for the whole school to receive a simple meal of porridge and fruit. FAU also sponsor the school fees of over 150 of the children and have paid for the installation of a water supply for the school.

FAU have for some time been concerned about the future, potential, development of the school. The option to improve facilities is limited by the issue of ownership of the land, but in recent months FAU have received 2 generous donations which have enabled us to assist ACET Uganda in purchasing a new plot of land just 500 meters from the existing school site.

new land The long term plan is to raise funds to build new facilities which will enable the school to progress further.

The school already achieves high standards in its teaching and with better facilities would be able to offer even greater prospects for the children.
