ACET International Alliance - Saving lives, Providing Care |
||||
ACET was founded in the UK in 1988 by Dr Patrick Dixon, as a practical, compassionate response to the challenges of AIDS. Today you will find independent ACET programmes in over 20 nations, all working together as part of the rapidly growing ACET International Alliance. The Alliance is a group of independent organisations around the world working to reduce rates of new HIV infection, care for those affected by HIV/AIDS and support AIDS orphans. Each country director is accountable to their own national board and responsible for their own programmes and funding. Many of these independent organisations now have international influence of their own . In many countries the spread of HIV remains out of control and we are in a race against time to save future generations. Many communities in Africa have been devastated and we are now seeing the rapid spread of HIV across India, Russia and China. It is hard for most people in Western countries to imagine what it is like knowing that a third of all parents of school children in your town or city are going to die of AIDS, a third of your office colleagues or even a third of your church congregation. AIDS is wiping out much of the progress made in some countries over the last 20 years. It is pointless to expect economic growth, fresh water projects, micro finance and other strategies to deliver a miracle if AIDS is not tackled at the same time. AIDS is like leprosy was. Is there another illness which results in some people in some communities being killed or beaten up for having an AIDS diagnosis? Access to anti-viral therapy is improving and prolongs life, but there is still no cure or vaccine and prevention has to be our urgent priority.
