Recent news from ACET Zimbabwe paints a mixed picture. For those with money there is now food in the shops and fuel in the garages. Schools are open and the national unity government is functioning. However, for many infected or affected by HIV and AIDS things have got worse. A new school fee structure has dramatically increased secondary school fees, excluding many who cannot afford to pay the extra, whilst transport and food costs make it difficult for the poorest families to eat a good diet, go to school or travel to hospitals and clinics to collect ARV and other drugs essential to their treatment. ACET Zimbabwe continues to work with thousands of orphans and those housebound because of HIV and AIDS. On a 25 March visit to one area where ACET is active the team reported: We had a wonderful time yesterday of visiting the sick and the CHH [child headed homes] and after that we had an evaluation with the volunteers of that village. The situation on the ground is not all that good, a lot of patients are failing to get to the nearest hospital due to transport cost and as a result are unable to collect and take their ARVs. As a result, ACET is now providing a monthly transport service between a number of rural villages and the local hospital, but needs urgent funding to continue this work.
