HIV vaccine trials bring hope for the future

Commenting on the announcement of the major trial results, published by UNAIDS on 24 September 2009, Peter Fabian, ACET's Chief Executive reinforced the need for urgent and continuing prevention work, alongside the search for a medical solution to HIV and AIDS.

Whilst, Peter said,  any progress towards an effective vaccine for HIV is enormously encouraging, we are, seemingly, still many years away from a  proven and universally available vaccine.  Meanwhile thousands of new infections are occurring every day and the work to offer effective education for prevention remains urgent.

In Thailand, where the trials were carried out, ACET teams run an orphanage for those who have lost family to AIDS and are looking to expand their prevention work in local schools.  In Thai society, as in many others around the world, stigma and ignorance are the major barriers to effective HIV and AIDS prevention work and ACET is committed to tackling these in the 23 countries where it works.
